At Open Gate Foundation, our Environmental Conservation and Climate Change program is dedicated to promoting sustainable environmental practices and addressing the impacts of climate change. Our mission is to protect natural resources, enhance biodiversity, and foster a resilient community capable of adapting to environmental challenges.
Working Together to End Poverty and Environmental Degradation At Open Gate Foundation Kenya, our mission is to work hand in hand with communities to eradicate poverty and combat environmental degradation. We adopt a rights-based approach and a market-led conservation strategy to ensure inclusive, equitable, and sustainable management of natural resources. We believe that individuals living in poverty are key players in the fight to end poverty. By leveraging local knowledge of indigenous resources and existing practices, we help communities sustainably manage their resources and develop business solutions.
Through the power of technology, we empower underprivileged communities to enhance their skills and knowledge, enabling them to create practical and sustainable solutions that transform their lives and protect the environment. Our initiatives focus on creating and sustaining better livelihoods by providing capacity development, access to technology, financial and business development services, market linkages, and holding the government accountable to the needs of disadvantaged populations.
Although we are a non-profit organization, we are dedicated to ending extreme poverty by embracing a social enterprise approach to development. We collaborate with other like-minded organizations and individuals to bring real, lasting change to those in need. By fostering strong business cases, we help generate income, create jobs, and build wealth in impoverished communities.

Key Activities:
Reforestation and Landscape Restoration at Mount Kenya Forest
The Mount Kenya Forest is an indigenous forest critical for regulating Kenya’s water resources. However, it has faced severe degradation due to deforestation, illegal logging, and human encroachment. To reverse this damage, the Open Gate Foundation has partnered with Kenya Forest to undertake extensive reforestation and landscape restoration efforts. Our initiatives aim to restore degraded areas, enhance biodiversity, combat climate change, and improve water security. These efforts include large-scale tree planting campaigns, engaging local communities, and advocating for supportive policies. The involvement of local communities and various stakeholders is central to our approach, ensuring that restoration efforts are sustainable and impactful.

Agroforestry and Community Development in Meru County
In Meru, the Open Gate Foundation is championing agroforestry as a sustainable restoration method. This project integrates crops and trees to revitalize land and agricultural practices. We have mobilized community groups to actively participate in this initiative, empowering individual members through curated training programs. One of our key environmental focuses is soil stabilization, ensuring that agricultural processes are protected and enhanced. Through agroforestry, we aim to create resilient agricultural systems that benefit both the environment and the local communities.
