Voice of Freedom

Dignity. Justice. Accountability.

Who We Are

Voice of Freedom is an autonomous, survivor-led governance council anchored by the Open Gate Foundation (OGF Kenya). We represent the “Civic and Legal Heart” of a movement dedicated to shifting power from institutions back to the people.

We are not just a program; we are a self-governing body of survivors, paralegals, and rights defenders working to ensure that human rights are not just legal concepts, but lived realities for every Kenyan.

Our Mandate

Voice of Freedom exists to bridge the gap between the law and the citizen. We organize communities to move from individual vulnerability to collective civic power.

  • Uphold Dignity: Protecting the inherent rights of every survivor.

  • Legal Empowerment: Providing the tools for communities to navigate and influence the justice system.

  • Public Accountability: Ensuring that duty-bearers remain transparent and responsive to the needs of the marginalized.

Strategic Pillars of Action

1. Human Rights and Social Justice

We lead survivor-centered documentation of rights violations. By creating safe spaces for truth-telling, we ensure that the voices of those affected by injustice are at the forefront of the national conversation.

2. Civic Education and Digital Tech

Through our partnership with the Uwazi Hub, we simplify the Constitution and legal frameworks into digestible, digital tools. We train community members in mobile journalism and data storytelling to report governance gaps in real-time.

3. Legal Reform and Policy Advocacy

We don’t just follow the law; we help shape it. The Council submits survivor-led policy briefs to County Assemblies and participates in national dialogues to advocate for laws that are gender-responsive, inclusive, and fair.

4. Protection and Referral Pathways

We strengthen community-led protection systems. This includes mapping safe houses, legal aid clinics, and medical support centers to ensure no survivor is left to navigate their crisis alone.

5. Impact at a Glance

  • 250+ Survivors trained in legal literacy and civic participation.

  • 3 Policy Briefs submitted to county-level governance on protection and rights.

  • 8+ Counties impacted by our rights awareness campaigns.

  • Active Watchdog Forums hosting regular dialogues between citizens and local leaders.

6. Governance: Independent and Survivor led

Voice of Freedom operates under a Council Charter that guarantees its autonomy. While we leverage the shared infrastructure and fiscal sponsorship of Open Gate Foundation, our leadership is independent.

  • Autonomous Decision-Making: The Council decides its own thematic priorities and budget allocations.

  • Representative Leadership: 100% of our Council Fellows are survivors or dedicated rights defenders with lived experience.

  • Fiscal Integrity: Our operations are backed by OGF Kenya’s rigorous financial management and regulatory compliance.
