Shield of Hope Network
Fiscally Sponsored by Open Gate Foundation Kenya
About Us
Shield of Hope Network is an independent, survivor-informed human rights organization based in Kenya. We work to protect, empower, and amplify the voices of marginalized communities—especially women, girls, youth, and grassroots defenders—who face systemic injustice, exploitation, and exclusion.
Founded in response to the urgent need for safe, community-rooted human rights advocacy, Shield of Hope operates as a discreet yet determined network. We provide legal empowerment, psychosocial healing, civic education, and rapid response support to those often left behind by formal systems. Our work is grounded in dignity, equity, and resilience.
Shield of Hope is fiscally sponsored by Open Gate Foundation , a registered nonprofit that provides fiduciary oversight, regulatory compliance, and institutional support. While operating under this fiscal umbrella, Shield of Hope maintains full programmatic and leadership autonomy, with its own board, strategic direction, and operational priorities.
Vision
We envision a just, inclusive, and equitable society where every person—regardless of gender, age, ability, or background—lives free from violence, fear, and systemic oppression.
Mission
Our mission is to promote and protect human rights through survivor-led advocacy, legal empowerment, trauma-informed care, and grassroots mobilization.
Core Values
Human Dignity: Every person has inherent worth and the right to live free from harm.
Justice: We pursue fairness, accountability, and redress at all levels.
Community Ownership: We believe in locally led solutions and participatory change.
Confidentiality & Safety: We protect the identities and stories of those we serve.
Intersectionality: We address how gender, poverty, disability, and age compound vulnerability.
Transparency: We uphold ethical governance and responsible stewardship of resources.
Strategic Focus Area
Our work is delivered through five interconnected program areas:
Legal Empowerment: We train community paralegals, host legal aid clinics, and support survivors navigating justice systems.
Trauma & Healing Justice: We provide counseling, group therapy, and safe spaces for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, trafficking, and displacement.
Civic Engagement & Advocacy: We facilitate grassroots campaigns, civic education, and policy dialogues on human rights, governance, and accountability.
Protection & Rapid Response: We offer emergency support for at-risk activists, whistleblowers, and survivors facing retaliation or threats.
Coalition Building: We convene CBOs, youth groups, and women’s movements into unified platforms for justice and systemic change.
Our Approach
Shield of Hope Network adopts a rights-based, survivor-centered, and community-anchored approach. We work through trusted local networks and community-based organizations, elevate the leadership of those with lived experience, and use data, storytelling, and legal frameworks to influence policy and practice.
